January 2011

So much for New Year's resolutions! Here are some highlights of January--maybe at some point I will be able to delve a littler deeper:)

Bridget and Caroline are b.f.f's--most of the time. I did overhear them at Miss Debbie's involved in some 3 year old drama. Caroline told Bridget that another girl in their class was now her best friend, so Bridget glommed on to an unsuspecting little Emma and told Caroline that Emma was her best friend now. Bridget sat next to, almost on top of Emma to prove it! Here are Caroline and Bridget playing dress-ups! They are just getting ready to scream and run into another room--that's how they play for hours!
It snowed during Christmas Break! We are so unprepared, but Bridget didn't mind using socks for gloves--she doesn't know any better.
And where there's snow, you will find Asher!
Here's Bridget practicing here solo of "I am a Child of God" the night before our whole family spoke in church.
Here are the kids after church the day we were in charge of sacrament meeting. I was so proud of all of them! Gabe started us out with a talk taken from "The Strength of Youth" handbook. He chose the topic: music and dancing. He said that he likes to listen to his ipod shuffle and break dance, but that he knows he should only listen to uplifting music and go to dances where the spirit can be. He read the whole thing and amazed everyone!

Then Bridget sang "I Am a Child of God" solo. She got right up and started singing before I started playing the piano, so I had to try to catch up to her! Jonah was next, and he spoke on not using bad language. He wanted to give a really long talk:) He looked sharp in his baptism suit. Asher gave a talk on the Sabbath Day, and told a story about a man who chose not to play sports on Sunday. Sydney talked on the importance of good friends. Then I played the piano and the kids sang "If the Savior Stood Beside Me." I practiced that song thousands of times, but I was so nervous I had to yell at myself inside to keep playing to the end. The kids sounded really nice, and Sydney played the viola a cappella before the song, then played while everyone else sang the last verse. After that, Steve and I both spoke, and after church we took a long nap! Way to go Layton kids--thanks for making us look good for once:)
I found dozens of these pictures on my camera. Jonah was trying to make a still photo animation movie with Harry Potter Legos.
Here's Bridget watching a movie with her "girls" named Barbie, Sallie, Chalala, Lunkie, Sleeping Beauty, and . When Gabe goes to school, it's just the two of us in the afternoons.
Gabe with his tats and eye patch after a birthday party at Pirate Island Pizza.
Spring fever in January...Sydney fell asleep in the sun reading a book. Then it got really cold the next week~
Asher has been playing basketball on a city team that Steve coaches. You'll have to talk to Steve about whether that has been a bonding experience or not!
Sydney got to play in an honors orchestra concert at Cox Auditorium.
On MLK Day I took the kids (minus Syd) hiking in Snow Canyon. We were all reminded why we live here that day--it was absolutely perfect!

Here's my little Wolf Den on our field trip to the fire station. The boys were in heaven!
They all got to try on the fireman's backpack, and they all had to pretend it wasn't that heavy. Dramatically on queue at the end of the tour, the firemen got called out to a fire, and we got to watch them drive away.
I have to laugh and shrug my shoulders on this one. My boys are obsessed with Chess. I love it!

Top Pics 2010

Since I haven't updated this blog for 14 months, I am starting the new year out with a quick overview of the entire year. Thanks to Sydney who just spent two hours uploading 90 pictures:)

Sydney participated in the Snow Canyon H.S. production of Willie Wonka as an eighth grader (Nov. 2009)

Here she is with Mr. Wonka himself.
Our family went to Temple Square with the Walkers and the Layton grandparents, including great-grandma Layton
The Walkers
All the cousins
The whole group
Gabe turned 5 and had a party. Somehow his parties always end in tears.
We visited Tuacahn and sat on Santa's lap. The 2009 Santa was much more jolly that year.

Christmas Eve 2009: opening the book from Grandma and Grandpa Layton
Christmas morning 2009. Notice the dazed expressions on my parents' faces. They stayed up until 2: 30 am helping Santa put together 4 new beds for Syd and the three boys. We loved having them with us on Christmas morning, but they didn't come back this year....hmmmm.... I wonder why?
Bridget got a ballerina outfit and a "new" bed--too big for the crib :-(
Moving ahead to 2010. Here is our awesome relay team for the lake to lake relay. We relayed from Gunlock to Sand Hollow on a windy, miserable day. We reached our goal: we did NOT come in last, and we had fun hanging out in Tara's car.
Again, jumping ahead to Easter 2010. Here's our egg hunt at the church.
Coloring Easter Eggs
Syd and Bridge in matching Easter dresses. Any resemblance between these two?
Asher earned his Arrow of Light (May 2010) and advanced to the Boy Scouts when he turned 11.

Gabriel graduated from Miss Debbie's preschool.
Jonah turned 8...

Jonah was baptized June 5, 2010. All he wanted for his birthday was a suit for church. Doesn't he look handsome?

15 minutes before church the day after Jonah's baptism, Bridget covered her whole body in marker art.
Summer 2010 was a summer of swimming! Here we are at th splash pad. We spent lots of time at the Green Valley pool, or skim boarding at the Virgin River, or rock jumping at Gunlock. I can't believe I don't have any pictures.
On a whim we showed up for Joey's wedding reception in Sandy in June. I'm so glad we went. It was fun to remember our own wedding reception here and dance with my sisters and cousins.
Bridget and Jenevieve
This one's for Joel.
Rachel and mom look good in this one, so I'll sacrifice my own pride and post this one:)
For Sydney, it was a summer of soccer. Here she is at soccer camp getting a pep talk from coach McKenna.

Luckily there is a splash pad near the soccer field for the sweaty little kids to cool off in.

Bridget turned 3. She lived in this "fat suit" all summer
Sydney turned 14!
We went to San Diego for the best family reunion ever! Here we are at the Mormon Battalion memorial/visitor's center in San Diego with all of the Layton side.

Layton cousins.
Panning for gold

Sea World. Fun and FREEZING! San Diego had a record cold August this year, but we made the best of it.

First day of school Asher started 6th grade in a new school--Lava Ridge Intermediate.
Sydney started 9th grade at Snow Canyon Middle School
Jonah started 3rd grade at Santa Clara Elementary
Gabe started afternoon Kindergarten

Bridget was the queen panty sword fighter
Bridget started preschool with Miss Debbie the next week. Yes, that's five kids in 4 schools with 5 schedules!
7:20: Asher departs
7: 35: Sydney departs
8:30: Jonah departs
12:15: Bridget departs
12:30: Gabe departs
2:15: Asher picks up Bridget on his way home from school
3:00 Sydney returns (unless she has soccer)
3:45 Gabe and Jonah return

So, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I have approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes where I'm the only one home!
with her best friend Caroline
Bridget after her first day of preschool. Notice the nasty carpet in this picture. I'm so glad it's gone!
Grandpa Jones turned 91
Happy Birthday Grandpa!
Jonah and Gabe played on the same flag football team! Those mouth guards were quite the novelty!
Gabe looking sharp!

Gabe and Gabe as Batman and Robin. This picture makes me LOL!
Asher was the Mad Hatter but wouldn't wear the wig. Stubborn boy!
My favorite picture of Bridget of the year--Jesse:)
Mad Hatter?
Batman
Last minute costume change for Jonah.

Sydney as Cleopatra with her friend Mattie. I was sick, sick, sick on Halloween:(

Here's hoping for a better blogging year in 2011!
